Did something I have not done in years. Dusted off the fly rod and vest and headed out to fish. Fishing in Ohio is not the same as out west. No open land to head to find a spot; also this is bass territory. However, I did hear of the Mad River sticking trout and this is a good time to fish them.
I intended to get into small mouth with the fly rod, however wanted to check out trout spot on the Mad River. So headed out Sunday and did little scouting of Kiser Lake; looks like a nice float tube lake as it had no motors allowed and it apx 45 minus drive. Did no fishing at the lake however I headed over to a access spot for the Mad River.
I arrived and there was no one around. I know it was Easter Sunday .. still I expected at lease one or two others. Get on the gear and tie on a fly and headed out. Water was cool, clear and not flowing too fast to wade in. After losing one fly and catching two trees I started to double I had any knack for fishing again. I was never a hard core fly fisher; if I caught three to four small trout in Idaho I was ecstatic. Switched flys to a prince nymph; picked a spot near a log that looked good. Still thinking this day was just going to be an exercise in casting and knot tying day. Then bang! I got a fish! And that little brown trout made my day.
I’m not a total loss. I can still read the water; and get a fly where I want and catch a fish. Felt good and look forward to doing little more.
